Jim Jarmusch Directs New Cat Power Music Video For "A Pair Of Brown Eyes"

Iconic filmmaker Jim Jarmusch has directed the music video for Cat Power's interpretation of The Pogues’ "A Pair of Brown Eyes" from her new album Covers, out now.

Widely considered one of film’s most original and iconoclastic minds, Jarmusch’s filmography includes acknowledged classics like Down By Law, Stranger Than Paradise, Night on Earth, and Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai. His musical reach is similarly pathbreaking, having worked with luminaries Tom Waits, Neil Young, RZA, GZA, Joe Strummer, Iggy Pop and more. For his first collaboration with Chan Marshall, Jarmusch shot in New York City at Blonde Studios, highlighting her in an airy ghostlike quality, alternating between misty angles of Marshall performing on the Mellotron.

"As someone who deeply loves Cat Power’s music, getting to collaborate with Chan on this video was like a dream come true,” says Jarmusch. “She’s so inspiring to me, of course as an artist, but she’s also just such an extraordinary person."

Since its release Covers has been met with widespread praise from The New Yorker (“in reinterpreting classics, she has furthered her stature as one”), Pitchfork (“her voice has never sounded better”), Vulture, FADER, NYLON, Rolling Stone and more, all highlighting Marshall’s unmatched art of song interpretation, as well as echoing her multi-generational impact.

Cat Power recently played the BBC 6 Music Festival, following the BBC’s unprecedented addition of four songs from Covers to their playlists. Covers has received glowing reviews in the UK, with four star reviews from MOJO, The Sunday Times, NME, and The Evening Standard. This summer, she will hit the road in Europe, play a sold out show in Paris and support Pearl Jam at their Hyde Park London show on July 8 alongside the Pixies with exciting additional news coming soon with Jack White.

Marshall is currently on a tour across North America with a full band; this week she adds 7 new shows in Vancouver, Louisville, Chicago, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Sonoma and Grass Valley, CA along with a rescheduled San Francisco date for September. Marshall recently appeared on WNYC’s All of It, WABE’s City Lights, performed on WXPN’s World Cafe who said, “no one does a cover song quite like Cat Power…,” the How Long Gone podcast, WTF with Marc Maron and more. She recently chatted with fine art photographer and friend Christy Bush for The Bitter Southerner and The Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde for Interview Magazine

Covers showcases Marshall’s singular chronicling of the ever-evolving great American songbook - featuring her own personal rendition of Billie Holiday's “I’ll Be Seeing You,” an ode to a lost friend, Frank Ocean's "Bad Religion," the Dead Man's Bones' "Pa Pa Power,” plus an updated rendition of the Cat Power song "Hate" from The Greatest (2006), retitled “Unhate” for the album. Covers is at once a reminder of Marshall’s artistically intuitive power and the latest chapter in a truly illustrious career.
