'Cold Brew', posthumous album from Sam Mehran, out today via Weird World
28th July 2021
“'LOUNGY' is a fun, spacey, and a little bit glamorous stomper that never dwells on an idea long enough for it to become boring. Mehran may be gone but his legacy lives on.”
THE FADER
Today, July 28th, marks the third anniversary of the passing of the multi-talented producer, songwriter and musical savant, Sam Mehran. A soul departed too soon, Weird World commemorates his legacy with the release of Cold Brew, an intentionally instrumental album of rock music that Sam was working on prior to his death, out now. Its 17 songs were compiled under the supervision of Sam’s father, Abbas Mehran, by friends Nicholas Weiss and Katie Wagner, and are driven by Sam’s effortlessly hooky guitars, their warm, golden sound, and his puckish attitude. Cold Brew was recorded in Los Angeles between April and May 2018 and features album artwork designed by Sam himself.
Also out today is a full-album visualizer, utilizing the previously released videos for “COLD BREW,” “LOUNGY,” and “70,” created by Clayton McCracken. Get Cold Brew now on streaming & vinyl, and watch it below.
A songwriter, guitarist, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, Sam started a lot of projects and played in a lot of bands over his 15-year career, including Test Icicles; he also had several recording aliases for his solo work, such as Outer Limits Recordings. He released everything from pugnacious dance-punk to mesmeric disco loops; unhinged hip-hop beats to perfectly poised pop songs.
Usually very critical of his own work, Sam talked with friends about how freeing it was to make Cold Brew: to keep the songs short, to not dwell on production, to not think about his voice, to simply enjoy himself. With Cold Brew’s release, both longtime fans and newcomers to Sam Mehran’s world can enjoy his whimsical, wonderful legacy, too.

Album | 30th July 2021
Cold Brew is a posthumous collection of instrumental rock music from Sam Mehran recorded in Los Angeles between April and May 2018. Compiled under the guidance of Sam’s father, Abbas Mehran, and curated by Sam’s friends Nicholas Weiss and Katie Wagner, it’s the first time that Sam’s solo music will be released under his own name.
Sam recorded over one hundred songs for Cold Brew, a selection of which are presented here in their original form, without any additional production or remixing. Cold Brew was always intended to be an instrumental album, driven by effortlessly hooky guitars, warm, golden sound, and puckish attitude. Using dry, driving sonics without much reverb or washy ambience, it’s informed by rock’s history but not reverent towards it.
