The Range Shares New Single "Relegate"

The Range, the project of Vermont-based musician and producer James Hinton, releases new single “Relegate” from his forthcoming album Mercury, out June 10. “Relegate,” which samples the 2001 Keke Wyatt single “Nothing in This World,” evokes the rush of pure four-on-the-floor but avoids becoming too locked-in. Hinton opens up the mix and imbues the house motifs with his own distinct warm glow.

Hinton says on the track, “It represents the butterflies you feel in a new relationship. The logical part of your brain is toast at that time and I like that this song captures that kind of unthinking swirling moment to me.”

The Range will be performing at San Francisco’s inaugural Portola Fest on September 25 alongside Flume, The Chemical Brothers, Kaytranada, Jamie XX, Toro y Moi, Charlie XCX and many more. More details can be found HERE.

Album | 10th June 2022

On Mercury, Hinton builds on the techniques he established on his critically acclaimed 2016 LP Potential, seeking to create human connection in the Internet age through sampling vocalists from the corners of YouTube, Instagram, and Periscope. “I feel like I can find ways to express myself in ways that I’m too shy or unable to do in the real world,” Hinton says of the process.

Mercury is moody, transportive, and undeniably rave-infused, and although it is indebted to IDM mainstays and grime pioneers, the album finds Hinton pushing himself outside the constraints of any one specific genre.
