Domino announces Record Store Day 2020 releases

Domino is happy to announce two Record Store Day 2020 releases for August 29th, a 7” from The Pastels and a special 10th anniversary edition LP of Villagers’ Becoming A Jackal.

The Pastels will be releasing two songs from a John Peel Show recorded at BBC's Maida Vale studio in 1997.

Stephen Pastel recalled the experience: “I cannot over-emphasise our absolute joy at being invited to record this session - our previous one, thirteen years earlier hadn’t gone that well and Peel (whose show we adored, him too) had taken a while to come back round to us. These BBC sessions were fairly quick but recorded in a great sounding studio with a great setup. We really wanted it to come off and we sound wilder than we do on Illumination” [their 1997 album].

“Ship To Shore” is a song the band had previously recorded with Sandy Dirt (their collaboration with Al Larsen). Here we find it in focus and direct. The other track included on the Record Store Day exclusive 7” is “Advice To The Graduate”, a sweetly poignant Silver Jews song by David Berman. Stephen adds: “It seemed poignant then, now almost unbearably so. Katrina and I had been asked to perform it at a Drag City showcase in New York a couple of years earlier with the Drag City All Stars. It’s such a perfect, simple song and it made sense to us partly because of Laurence who had introduced us and made it feel like we were all in a Domino family. Still feel that.”

2020 marks the 10th anniversary of Becoming A Jackal, Conor O’Brien’s debut album, which on its release was shortlisted for the Mercury Music Prize and Choice Music Prize with the title track crowned “Best Song” at the Ivor Novello Awards. To celebrate the landmark, Villagers are releasing a limited-edition LP of the album including five home-recorded demos from O’Brien, some of which have never been previously released. The exclusive Record Store Day release features colour vinyl (one red, one gold) and includes a 4-page booklet.
