Dirty Projectors release new single & video "Inner World"
11th June 2020
Today, Dirty Projectors share new single, “Inner World”, with a music video posing existential questions against an extraterrestrial backdrop. On the second preview of the group’s forthcoming Flight Tower EP, out June 26 on Domino, keyboardist-percussionist Felicia Douglass helms a cascading, three-part melisma of voices alongside Maia Friedman and Kristin Slipp. Watch the video below.
Felicia Douglass is in the captain's chair for Flight Tower, singing and collaborating on the lyrics with bandleader Dave Longstreth; the EP is the second of five Dirty Projectors will release this year, each featuring lead vocals from a different band member before all four singers trade verses on the fifth and final installment. Flight Tower presents a striking, stylistic contrast to the yearning folk of the first EP in the sequence, Windows Open, sung by Maia Friedman and released in March.
“What do you do with a five-person band when every member is talented enough to be the lead? Give each artist an EP on which to be the frontperson, of course.” —TIME MAGAZINE
“Dave Longstreth has always been at his best when surrounded by a handful of talented, idiosyncratic musicians, and it feels as if he is, thankfully, back there again.” —THE FADER
“this whole five EP project might turn out to be a pretty interesting exercise in the malleability of one band” —STEREOGUM
“Inner World” follows Flight Tower’s lead single “Lose Your Love”, which Entertainment Weekly called “a bit like coffee. The various dings and plinks peppered throughout feel like a caffeine kick, while keyboardist Felicia Douglass's silky smooth delivery provide that warm feeling.” Watch it below.
A limited edition deluxe five-record box set compiling the EPs, as well as a limited quantity of individual 12" vinyl of Windows Open and Flight Tower, are available to pre-order via Domino Mart. The 12" vinyl EPs will also be at local record stores this summer.
Dirty Projectors Flight Tower
EP | 31st July 2020
This summer, Dirty Projectors will release Flight Tower, the next in a sequence of five EPs to come in 2020. Each EP will feature a different band member on lead vocals — Maia, Felicia, Kristin & Dave — with everyone trading verses on the fifth and final installment.
On Flight Tower,
Felicia is in the captain’s chair. Each track is built around her
mellifluous alto and empathetic eye, and Felicia and Dave wrote the
lyrics together. Longstreth tills the
other side of the screen, letting the sonic seeds planted on 2017’s Dirty Projectors and 2018’s Lamp Lit Prose blossom into something weird and new.
