Protomartyr dévoile son nouveau single "Elimination Dances"

Protomartyr - le groupe post-punk de Détroit composé de Joe Casey (chant), Greg Ahee (guitare), Alex Leonard (percussions) et Scott Davidson (basse) - "sonne plus vivant que jamais" (Stereogum). Aujourd'hui, le quatuor présente son nouveau single, “Elimination Dances,” accompagné de son clip, extrait de son prochain album, Formal Growth In The Desert, qui sortira le 2 juin via Domino. Post confinement, Casey et ses coéquipiers se sont retrouvés avec un sentiment d'incertitude, se demandant si et comment continuer après les turbulences des années de pandémie. Ils se sont servis de cette ambivalence pour peaufiner une chanson qui tient son nom de celui d’un chapitre d'un manuel de danse pour adolescents des années 1950. La chanson "Elimination Dances" fait référence à un jeu dans lequel "vous êtes éliminé lorsque vous perdez la danse", ce qui leur a semblé être une métaphore appropriée pour la survie. La vie est un combat, mais "on peut aussi bien continuer à danser jusqu'à ce que l’élimination arrive", dit Casey.
Faisant suite au premier single “Make Way,” "une valse tendue qui explose en un hymne endiablé" (The FADER), "Elimination Dances" est accompagné d’une vidéo réalisée par Yoonha Park et met en scène le danseur Kota Yamazaki. "Mon père m'a dit un jour que la vie était comme un rouleau de papier toilette. Plus on se rapproche de la fin, plus ça va vite", explique Yoonha Park. "Cette idée, ainsi que les paroles, ont conduit à l'idée d'un motif chorégraphique qui se répète à mesure qu'il s'étend en une spirale en expansion. La chorégraphie se répète à chaque cycle, mais doit être dansée de plus en plus vite pour suivre le rythme, jusqu'à ce qu'elle finisse par sombrer dans le chaos. J'ai récemment appris que la citation sur le papier hygiénique était en fait d'Andy Rooney".

Since their 2012 debut, Protomartyr have mastered the art of evoking place: the grinding Midwest humility of their hometown, as well as the x-rayed elucidation of America that comes with their vantage. The group’s sixth album was recorded at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, TX with producer Jake Aron. “The desert is more of a metaphor or symbol,” singer Joe Casey says, “of emotional deserts, or a place or time that seems to lack life.” The “growth” came from a period of colossal transition for Casey, including the death of his mother. But life does go on, and Casey describes the great theme of Formal Growth In The Desert as an embrace and acknowledgment of that fact: a 12-song testament to “getting on with life,” even when it feels impossibly hard.
