Matthew E. White releases new solo album 'K Bay' today; shares choreographed dance video for "Let's Ball"

Matthew E. White today released K Bay, his first solo album in six years. To celebrate, Matthew also announced his equally long-awaited return to the road in 2022 with headlining dates in the U.S. and the U.K., including shows at NYC’s Bowery Ballroom (Jan. 27th) and the U.K’s Islington Assembly Hall (Mar. 22nd); tickets are now on-sale HERE, and a full itinerary is listed below.

Out now is his first choreographed dance video for the charismatic album track “Let’s Ball,” featuring a full dance crew dressed as Matthew, is also out now. “Well, first off, I've always wanted a dancing video, but secondly, I also wanted to make a little fun of how self absorbed making a music video really is,” explains White (who here stars as the video’s director).

The video’s actual director Wes Parker adds, “When Matthew called me with the ‘Let’s Ball’ concept, I knew it was gonna be so much fun to make. We tried to create this absurd, stern, director character who slowly over the course of the video begins to soften/warm up. I have always loved making skits—putting people in costumes, painting a scene or a character—so this felt right up my alley.”

K Bay pre-release singles “Nested,” “Genuine Hesitation” and “Electric” collectively earned praise and support via Pitchfork (Most Anticipated Albums of Fall 2021), NPR Music (All Songs Considered podcast), Uproxx, Stereogum, Under the Radar, BBC 6 Music, Double J, Brooklyn Vegan, and more.

K Bay—White’s second release of 2021, following a collaboration with Lonnie Holley—is the astounding record he has forever aspired to make. A bold reclamation of independence and identity, K Bay establishes White as one of his era’s most imaginative artists. These 11 pieces are retro-futurist magic tricks that feel instantly classic and contemporary, the product of a musical mind that has internalized the lessons of his idols and used them to build a brilliant world of his own.

More than love, romance, or self-reliance, this is the animating ideal of K Bay: that we can forever strive for something better, no matter how flawed or blessed we have already been. A decade ago, with his solo debut Big Inner, Matthew E. White made a classic beauty no one expected; on K Bay, he has made a masterpiece by harnessing what he’s learned from that community and life itself in entirely unexpected, electrifying, and reaffirming ways.
