Animal Collective share new song + video “We Go Back”
1st February 2022
Animal Collective are set to release their new album Time Skiffs this Friday, and today they share a final preview, the new single “We Go Back” alongside a video created by the director and animator Winston Hacking. "It was a thrill to work with Animal Collective - they trusted our sense of play and commitment to spontaneity which is mirrored in their sound,” says Hacking. “The video is composed of scanned locations, miniature sets and collage cut outs that embrace the low-fi 3d aesthetic inherent in photogrammetry."
“We Go Back”
Over and over our song on my brain
I go back
We go back and I play it again
How far we go back is how forward we’ll go
It’s up to the Pleiades
And down the marrow
Trickle of a moment down my life
History in motion
Heat for feeling
Tremble in the moment
Tongue on cheek
I don’t feel the urge to turn back time
I just begin
Bend to the moment
Feel no thought
Listen to the sound of people hoping
That in the moment there will be bliss
A cause for the moment to be healing
And to begin
Written in a moment
Read in many
Here it comes again I’m breathing heavy
I ripped up a moments worth of love
In the matter of a moment I conceive
We just begin
I stood for a moment and the sun went down
I got sad for the sun cause I would get lonely
Leaving a trail of darkness on a world behind
And always being sun for a world beyond
That just begins
Animal Collective’s US tour kicks off next month in Richmond, Virginia and will be followed by a UK and European tour in November. Dates are below and tickets are available HERE.
Watch Animal Collective perform two unreleased Time Skiffs tracks, “Car Keys” and “Dragon Slayer,” plus Merriweather Post Pavilion favorite “In the Flowers” at Pitchfork Music Festival 2021 HERE.
Time Skiffs, the quartet’s first studio album in more than half a decade, feels like listening in on a conversation among four old friends, just as it felt during their inchoate early days or their Strawberry Jam heyday. These nine songs are love letters, distress signals, en plein air observations, and relaxation hymns, the collected transmissions of four people who have grown into relationships and parenthood and adult worry. But they are rendered with Animal Collective’s singular sense of exploratory wonder, same as they ever were. There are harmonies so rich you want to skydive through their shared air, textures so fascinating you want to decode their sorcery, rhythms so intricate you want to untangle their sources. Here is Animal Collective past 20, still in search of what’s next.
